Wedding Cake Supplies You Cannot Afford To Forget

The wedding cake may sound one of the simpler parts of your wedding supplies checklist but as with everything it can become as complicated as you would like to make it. To simplify things a little, below we talk about the bits and bobs that make up the wedding cake supplies so that you do not forget any.

Let’s assume that you are not going to make your own cake, as unless you know what you are doing, this could be a mistake. So it’s easy you think – “I just need to buy a cake” – wrong! You still need a wedding cake stand, supports for multi layer cakes, a topper, other decorations and some wedding cake boxes.

Wedding cake stands

Your beautiful wedding cake has arrived and needs to be displayed creatively at your reception. Cake stands come in all shapes and sizes. For a cake that does not need supports or pillars you can buy cheap bases and cover them in foil or buy a silver plateau stand. Some tiered cakes do not rely on supports, instead stacking cake upon cake, perhaps angled slightly differently at each level to add to the effect. These heavier cakes need a sturdier stand to hold their weight when being carried.

Modern cakes no longer need to be balanced precariously on top of one another. Instead each layer can be displayed in a beautiful stairway effect using stands of differing sizes and heights. Other twists include stands that balance over a fountain, some that slowly revolve or stands that link layers together with plastic Victorian style scrolls. If you are keeping up with popular trends and having a cupcake wedding cake, there are many tiered cupcake trees available to display them beautifully. And if you are having a wacky wedding theme why not tie your wedding cake stand in too? How about using a tree trunk or a surfboard shaped stand?

Wedding cake pillars

Wedding cakes made up of a number of individual tiers need to be stacked and joined together. Even cakes where the tiers are resting on each other need structural support through the use of dowels placed in the cakes that you will not see. For cakes where the tiers are stacked using columns or pillars, you need a cake separator set to stop the tiers from collapsing in on each other.

Wedding cake toppers

Some form of decoration to adorn the top of your wedding cake has become customary and is now a way that many couples choose to make their cake that little bit unique. There are many designs of wedding cake topper to choose from ranging from the romantic to the humorous. You can find bride and groom figurines, funny statues, floral displays and keepsakes made from porcelain such as a timeless castle, perfect for Cinderella.

Wedding cake decorating supplies

Gum paste is often used to make wedding cake flowers and other decorations, such as hearts and shapes. These are easy to store and will last forever. They come in many different colors and flower types and either as singles or sprays. They can turn a regular cake into the wedding cake of your dreams.

Wedding cake boxes

Getting your wedding cake from the bakery to your wedding venue can be a nerve racking ride. To reduce the risks of damage to the cake during transport you can get high quality cake boxes in any number of shapes and sizes. With advances in technology happening all the time, modern day boxes are stronger and can even be used to store and preserve the cake for longer.

Once the wedding cake has arrived at the venue and has been arranged and displayed the time will come to cut it. Now you will need a beautiful cake knife and server set as all eyes fall to the happy couple cutting the cake. The chances are all of the cake will not be eaten at the reception so it can be nice to give your guests a slice to take away with them. As such you will also need individual sized wedding cake boxes available.

Make your own wedding cake

For those of you mad enough to make your own wedding cake, in addition to the above you will need the cake ingredients, different sized cake pans, some sort of cake icing and probably a wedding cake book or online resource to point you in the right direction. You can even go the whole hog and buy moulds to make your own icing shaped as pearl drops or ropes, or to make rose shaped mints and veined rose leaves. Easy to use wedding cake kits may be a good option here as they include everything you need including the cake stand and edible flowers all at a reasonable price.
